Where to Buy Holly Bushes

You can buy holly from local garden centers, specialist and native-plant nurseries, and mail-order growers. Each has trade-offs in selection, quality, and price — and for berries, you need to confirm the plant's sex before you buy.

Local garden centers let you inspect plants in person and take them home the same day, but their selection is limited to popular hollies and the labels do not always state the plant's sex. Dedicated nurseries — including native-plant specialists and mail-order growers — carry far wider ranges, name the cultivar and sex clearly, and often ship well-rooted plants at the right season.

Wherever you buy, look for dense, well-colored foliage, no signs of scale or leaf miner, and a healthy root system that is not tightly pot-bound. Above all, if you want berries, confirm whether the plant is male or female and buy a compatible pollinator — many garden-center hollies are sold without that information, which is the most common reason a new holly never fruits.
